Former Executive Secretary of UNESCO IOC, Vladimir Ryabinin Visits Qingdao to Deepen International Cooperation for the Ocean Decade

On August 13th, a delegation led by Vladimir Ryabinin, former Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, visited the Decade Collaborative Center on Ocean-Climate Nexus and Coordination Amongst Decade Implementing Partners in P.R. China (DCC-OCC)。 They held a cordial meeting with representatives from the Center, the Ocean Decade International Cooperation Center, the Ocean Decade Ocean and Climate Seamless Forecasting System (OSF) Office, and the Qingdao West Coast New Area Ocean Development Bureau.

The meeting was chaired by Qiao Fangli, Deputy Director of the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Academician of the European Academy of Sciences. Sui Junchang, Director of the Qingdao West Coast New Area Ocean Development Bureau, delivered a welcome speech. Sui Junchang extended a warm welcome to Mr. Vladimir Ryabinin, mentioning that his visit would bring the latest concepts in global ocean governance, cutting-edge developments in marine scientific research, and valuable international cooperation experience. He expressed his expectation to collaborate more extensively and deeply with partners in fields such as marine scientific research, technological innovation, resource conservation, and sustainable development, accelerating the West Coast New Area's role in global ocean governance and jointly promoting the prosperous development of the global ocean cause.

Mr. Vladimir Ryabinin gave a speech. In his speech, Mr. Vladimir Ryabinin highly appreciated Qingdao's significant contributions to the Ocean Decade and emphasized that the DCC-OCC is a crucial part of the Ocean Decade implementation. He expressed great anticipation for future cooperation with such an outstanding team.

After listening to the progress reports of the DCC-OCC, the Ocean Decade International Cooperation Center, and OSF, Mr. Ryabinin provided valuable suggestions for the development and project implementation of the aforementioned institutions. Furthermore, both sides had in-depth discussions on how the Ocean Decade could more proactively produce ocean-based solutions, provide governance tools, and strengthen the connection between science and policy.

This visit enhanced the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO's understanding of the work of the DCC-OCC, increased the Center's visibility, and will play a positive role in expanding and deepening the Center's cooperation with important international organizations and achieving high-level operation of the Center.
