The Secretariat of Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions(ONCE) Programme was launched on 29 March in Xiamen, which will serve our goal of carbon neutrality and the realization of relevant research programmes.
Led by Chinese academician JIAO Nianzhi, ONCE Programme is based on his original theory of microbial carbon pump(MCP)。 It aims to investigate the mechanisms of negative ocean emissions through international cooperation and multidisciplinary cross-fertilisation, and to provide intelligent solutions for negative ocean emissions.
At present, ONCE is endorsed by UNESCO-IOC as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) programme, and has received positive responses from the scientific and technological communities at home and abroad, with international partners including 78 research institutes from 33 countries in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa and other regions of the world. The international cooperation model of "Headquarter + Base + Global focal points" has been formed.
